I think that Kara did a really great job on her lesson. She seemed to have really great enthusiasm and talked to the class as though we really were young children in a "teacher like" voice. Her tone and the way she presented the material went extremelly well. It seemed like she had really prepared for the lesson, and kept it interesting for all of us. One of the things that I really liked that she did was give some of us the opportunity to chose the type of weather and what movement to do. It got the class more involved with the lesson. Also, I thought it was a good idea to relate it to another subject, science in this case, because it makes it more relevant and it's great to mix up subjects to keep interest. The song overall went really well, and it was nice that she played the piano with it so that way we knew how to keep in tune. It also worked out that it was raining that day, so it made the connection between the students and the song that much stronger. Overall I think Kara did a really great job in every division that we were graded in. The only part I wouldn't give a perfect score on would be the delivery, because as the case was with all of us, it was out first lesson and nerves showed through a little bit. It was a really good lesson! I would have evaluated it...

Evaluation Form for In-Class Teaching Assignment

Name: Kara
Lesson: Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Musicianship (5 pts)
In tune, accurate pitch- You did a great job matching the pitch on the piano. However, the only suggestion that I would have was to play it in a higher pitch. The pitch was a little low for young children to try and match.

Accurate rhythm- As you played the song, the rhythm was accurate! The only thing that I would suggest would be to demonstrate how to tap the rhythm to the students/class. Some students might be lost if you just verbally instruct them to tap the rhythm.

Appropriate tempo- While playing/singing this song, you sang it at a tempo that everyone could follow and sing along (not too fast, not too slow).

Phrasing- Your phrasing was good. Even though it was a very short song, you sang it at a good pace so that students/the class could sing it smoothly.

Expression- Your expression was good throughout the song. You stayed enthusiastic and it will rub off on the students/class!

Leadership (10 pts)
Body language- Your body language was very positive throughout your lesson. You talked with your hands and looked very comfortable which will make the class comfortable.

Facial expression- Your facial expressions were also very positive. You didn’t roll your eyes etc. You looked excited and interested throughout the entire time that you were teaching.

Voice tone and volume- The volume of your voice was excellent. It was loud and clear and each and every student could hear it!

Eye contact- You made very good eye contact with the class while you were teaching. You didn’t just look down at the piano or the lesson plan. By making eye contact, this helps the class stay on task and interested in the lesson!

Intensity (energy)- As you started out the lesson you were very enthusiastic and positive and also remained this was throughout you teaching!

Preparation (15 pts)
Knowledge of music- You were very well prepared and knew the music! You were confident in singing/knowing the song and the class can see that.

Knowledge of plan- You did a great job not reading off your lesson plan. You were confident and knew what you were teaching and the order that it was going to go in. If you are comfortable, you class will be comfortable!

Written plan- I did not see your written plan, but when you presented you had a logical flow to your lesson that built upon the previous skill.

Instruments/equipment ready- All the equipment (drums and rhythmic sticks) was ready to go and was out for the students to use and get when it came time.

Recordings/charts/materials ready- N/A No other materials besides rhythmic sticks and drums were used.

Delivery of Instruction (20 pts)
Motivation, capturing attention- Throughout your lesson, you kept the class’ attention. You did this by using a nice loud voice, and sounded enthusiastic!

Sequencing of steps- The steps in your lesson flowed very logically. Each step built upon the other. It made it easy for the class to follow and learn.

Verbal instructions- Your verbal instructions were pretty clear throughout the lesson. The only suggestion that I would make is to slow down the speed that you are talking. Also, when teaching the children about rhythm, point out how many beats in the measure. Once you started playing, you could tell that they didn’t know whether to tap in 2/4 or 4/4.

Questioning- You did a great job of incorporating the class in your lesson. You asked them to include their own ideas in the song which the class will love!

Pace of lesson, flow, transition- The flow and transition throughout your lesson was very good and easy for the class to follow. The pace of your lesson could be slowed down a little more (speak slower, explain how many beats in the measure, demonstrate, and also demonstrate how to tap the song rhythmically).

Flexibility (ability to diagnose and adjust) - Your flexibility throughout your lesson was good. When students came up with new words to add into the song, you came up with creative motions that they could include!

Feedback to the learners- There was no clear feedback that you gave to individuals students. The only suggestion that I would make would to be making sure to tell students that they are on task and doing a good job (Jimmy good job singing in tune!).

Continuity/focus of lesson- Your lesson stayed on task and focused on learning the song, rhythmic beats, steady beat, and hand motions. You didn’t lose focus and drift away from your main focus.

Closure- You did a good job wrapping up your lesson and telling the students that they learned about the different kinds of weather. Instead of just telling them, maybe ask them questions about the different kinds of weather they learned about, the different hand motions they learned, etc.

The only other thing that I would suggest would to be interact with the students/class more. Step out from behind the piano and really get hands-on with the students. Otherwise, your lesson was really well planned and well thought out!
