While watching Nichole’s lesson plan she seemed very organized. When she was singing the song her pitch was accurate and that she was in tune. The tempo of the song was good and easy for the students to keep up with. Nichole’s body language seemed a little stiff. She did not seem relaxed, she could have been a little nervous. Her voice had good volume. It was loud enough for the students to hear her. She had a little excitement in her voice also. She was trying to get the students excited about the song. She kept eye contact with the class the whole time during the lesson. She also knew her song well. Her lesson plan was well planned out and prepared. She kept in interesting for the students and it kept their attention. Her whole lesson plan was very organized. Nichole captured the students attention by including all of them in the little activity she had them do while singing the song. Her lesson plan was sequenced and went in order. Her verbal instructions were pretty clear to the class. At one point the class didn’t understand what she was asking and she had to explain to them again. Then they were able to understand what she was asking. The focus of the class was a little unclear. I believe she was trying to teach them about the eighth note. Her lesson had an overall flow to it. Another thing it seemed to be missing was a clear closure. I wasn’t for sure if she had one. Overall for musicianship I would give her a 5 because she did a nice job meeting all the requirements. Then for leadership I would give her a 9 because her body language could have been a little more relaxed. For preparation I would give her a 15 because her plan was organized and well planned. Then for delivery of instruction I would give her a 19 because some of her instructions were a little unclear for the students, but she was able to explain them so they would understand the instructions. For total points I would give her 48/50.

For this being my first lesson that I have ever taught I think I did well. I know my enthusiasm could have been a lot better. I would give my self a 3 out of 5 for my points in musicianship, because I was off tempo when it came to the clapping, and tried to sing the song in tune, but I am not a great singer. I do know that I was able to separate the phrases in the song and group them together so that my students were able to connect them all together and sing the whole song without any problems. I think when it comes to the leadership category I would give myself a 8 out of 10. I think that I was nervous and that it showed in my facial expressions through out the lesson. I know that I had really good eye contact with my students and that when I talked and sang that my students were able to hear me. It took a lot of preparation to make this lesson plan, and I think I would give myself 14 out of 15. I can read and understand music, so that was not hard at all, but writing and coming up with ideas on how to teach the song was the hard part. I know that I had my friend and boyfriend pretend to be my students and I did the lesson with them, which helped me see what I needed to change before actually teaching it to the class. I practiced and practiced this lesson and wanted to get it down, I put a lot of time and effort into the lesson and took into consideration of the age group I wrote the lesson for. I kept changing things until I felt happy with my final lesson. For the motivation part of this grading scale I would give myself 17 out of 20. I could have been more motivated in my teaching and grabbing the students attention. I know my verbal instructions were clear and I think everyone understood what I was trying to teach them. I could of taken more time in my lesson and not rushed through it as fast as I did. Also I could of done a better closer at the end of the lesson. I did ask a few questions and one wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Overall I think I did a good job for my first lesson and would give myself an overall grade of 42/50.

I think that my best thing I did in the lesson was eye contact and the interaction with my students. Also how I broke the song up into phrases to teach it to the class. I had my boyfriend and friend help me practice and I spent a lot of time thinking about how I wanted to set up the lesson and how to present it to the class. I could of tried not to be as nervous and work on my tempo when it came to tapping the beat, I messed up because I was really nervous. If I was given another chance to redo the lesson I would change a question or two and I would practice it so much more. I would also try to talk louder and have a lot more energy during the lesson.

Evaluation of Nichole’s Lesson-By: Samantha Byers
When evaluating Nichole’s music lesson I found many positive aspects within it, making it a very functional lesson for first graders. While there were many positive qualities found throughout this lesson, there were also some areas in which I felt could be improved upon. Specifically, while teaching the lesson I felt Nichole’s musicianship skills were for the most part were very good. Nichole’s singing including her pitch and rhythm were good and her expression was very inviting for the children. The only aspect that I felt could be improved on under musicianship would be that she needed to slow the tempo down slightly when trying to keep the steady beat.
When evaluating Nichole’s leadership skills in particular I found that she had good facial expressions and intensity, however I felt she could have been a little louder when instructing and asking her students questions to show more confidence. Also it was clear when evaluating her preparation for the lesson that she had good knowledge of the song as well as the steps of her lesson plan. Nicole was also prepared in that she knew the questions she would like to ask the children throughout the lesson to make sure they were grasping each concept.
Next, while evaluating Nichole’s actual delivery of the lesson, I found that she did well in her verbal instructions and keeping the children’s attention throughout the lesson. I felt for the most part that her transitioning throughout the lesson went well and the flow was nice, but I would have like to see the song completely learned before the steady beat concept was introduced. I also feel that Nichole’s questioning skills were clear and concise and that she was able to be flexible with her student’s questions.
Overall, if I was to grade Nichole on her lesson, I would give her 45 out of 50 points.
