While watching Sam’s lesson it seemed very organized. When she was singing the song she seemed a bit out of tune and did not have quite the right pitch when the song would go higher. The tempo she used was appropriate and had the right speed for that song. Her body language looked very calm and that she was comfortable with her students. The volume of her voice was loud enough that I could hear her and her students should have definitely been able to hear her. Her tone was a pleasant tone. It wasn’t mono-tone and it wasn’t an uncomfortable tone to listen to. Her eye contact was great with the students. There did not seem to be much energy within the lesson nor the class. Sam really knew her song and was prepared to give this lesson. It was organized. She touch on all the main points in the song and what she wanted them to learn, which was steady beat. It was nice to incorporate the Clementine with the song. That makes it fun for the students and keeps them interested. The students understood what she was asking them to do and they also promptly answered the questions Sam asked. Her instructions throughout the lesson were clear and the student knew what she wanted them to do. There was a great flow to her lesson. She seemed to know exactly what was next. Her closure was a great way to finish the lesson and to also bring up the quarter not in which the students would learn next class. Overall for musicianship I would give her a 4 because of the little pitch problem. Leadership a 9 because she could try to make the lesson have a little more energy. Preparation a 15 and delivery of instruction a 20 because she was very organized and prepared. For total points I would give her 48/50.

As I watched Sam’s lesson was well thought out and organized. She was in tune for the most part, and her tempo was appropriate for a first grade classroom. The son she used was an age appropriate for first graders. For musicianship I would give her a 5. She was really calm and looked comfortable in the class setting. She always had smile on her face and all her students were able to hear her because she talked loud enough and clear enough for them to understand her. Her eye contact with the students was excellent; she had her eyes on them the whole time. I give her a 10 for leadership skills. For her preparation I know that she put time into the lesson and that the Clementine she used to relate it to her song which was a very nice idea as a visual aid. I feel though she could have had her students move throughout the classroom and use their energy instead of just sitting on the floor and passing a Clementine around the room, and patting their legs. First graders love to have hands on and want to interact with one another. Overall her preparation was really good, so I give her a 14 in the category of preparation. For her delivery she had a nice flow from one step to another. She ended her lesson well and I would give her a 20 in the delivery section. Over all I will give her a 49/50.

My Self Evaluation
When doing my self evaluation I feel that there were some definite good things about my performance when teaching the Clementine lesson, and I also feel there were some areas for improvement. One area based off of the criteria sheet that I feel I did well on in particular was in preparation. Prior to doing my lesson, I made sure that I knew the song, had my materials ready and that I was fully prepared to answer any questions my students might have and be able to help them in any way that they needed. I also feel that I did well in the delivery of my instruction because I think that I provided my students with the appropriate steps to fully learn the song and get an understanding of what a steady beat was. I also feel that I was able to keep a good pace when going through the steps of my lesson and that I was able to keep my students motivated and interested in the activity. Overall I prepared myself for this lesson by making sure I thought about my students while devising my lesson plan. I tried to put myself in the shoes of first graders and therefore I knew that I wanted to make the steps of the lesson very concise and to the point so the students could just focus on singing the song and having fun. I knew that if I was able to accomplish this, my students would have a good understanding of the aspects in which I was trying to teach them.
Also, after viewing my lesson I came across some areas in which I felt needed some improvement. For example, under the leadership criteria, I felt that I could have been a little bit louder when instructing my students. I tried to stay very friendly and open towards my students but I feel that it came off as a little too subdued. I also felt that in my attempt to stay open and less intimidating to my students I also lost some of my intensity. Although I feel I was able to keep my students attention, I felt I could have been a little more outgoing and fun for my students to really get them excited about learning a new song and how to keep a steady beat.
Lastly, if I could redo this lesson I would change the way that I did a few things. First of all, I would practice my lesson plan more with my peers before actually doing my lesson on camera and in front of the class. Next time when I practice my lesson, I will have someone tape it for me so I can make corrections before I actually do the lesson for a grade. The other thing I would change is that I would talk much louder and be more energetic with my students.
I would give myself a 47 out of 50.
